Otago's bowling attack bounced back with a controlled display to help seal a four-wicket win over the Queensland Academy in Brisbane yesterday.
Strike bowler Neil Wagner took one for 12 and Anthony Bullick two for 14 to restricted the home side to 131 for eight in a twenty/20 fixture.
Shaun Haig whacked 34 off 26 deliveries and Greg Todd compiled 28 as the Volts overhauled the modest total with more than two overs remaining.
The Otago attack took some tap against the same batting line-up on Tuesday but produced a better performance to help extract some revenge for the earlier loss.
Hesson said the outcome was satisfying, but he was more pleased with the improved performance from his pace attack.
"We stepped it up a notch and I was very pleased with the way we started with the ball," he said.
"Neil Wagner, Anthony Bullick and Warren McSkimming bowled nicely up front and that set the tone for the day."
Spinners Nick Beard and Nathan McCullum continued the good work, with McCullum nabbing three for 30 from his allotment of four overs.
Chasing a modest total Otago "did enough" with the bat, Hesson said, adding the game was won by restricting the opposition to a very achievable total.
"It was a 180 ground really, so I'm very pleased with the way we bowled and fielded."
Otago plays South Australia today then leaves for India tomorrow, where it will complete its preparations for the Champions League.
Fast bowler James McMillan bowled in the nets yesterday and continues to make good progress recovering from a hamstring strain.
