Draw enough to put North East Valley on top

North East Valley 221
drew with Green Island 118 for nine

North East Valley has moved to the top of Declaration Cup standings, despite being held to a draw by Green Island at Sunnyvale.

Hunter Kindley scored 103 to help Valley post 221 in a top-of-the-table clash.

Kindley batted at No3 and was in early, after Valley lost opener Jarrod Pike in the fifth over. Another two quick wickets fell, leaving Valley six for three.Hunter and Tom Griffin (22) got the rebuild under way and Jamie Murley played a telling innings at No9, with 42 not out.

But Hunter provided almost half the runs. He hit seven fours and three sixes during his 140-ball stint at the crease.

Otago all-rounder Christi Viljoen was demanding with the ball, taking five for 67 from 19.2 overs for Green Island. He also played a crucial role with the bat. His undefeated 55 from 110 balls helped his side hang on for a draw.

Viljoen valiantly held up an end as his side limped to 118 for nine.

No10 Dan Fleming saw off 26 balls before he was dismissed for a duck, probably the most valuable zero he has made.

Kaikorai 213
beat Carisbrook-Dunedin 206

Kurt Johnston will probably never bowl better and end up on the losing team.

The Carisbrook-Dunedin strike bowler took eight for 76. Club records are vague but that has to be up there with one of the best performances. But despite his mighty effort, Kaikorai kept scoring runs and posted 213 at Tonga Park.

The Bayly brothers, Taine (56) and Rhys (35), made major contributions, as did opener Jordan Gain, with 39.Ben Donkers whacked two sixes and three fours in a  sweet cameo for 29.

Anjas Bhogal stroked a superb century at the top of the Carisbrook-Dunedin innings to drag his side close to the target. He played pretty much a lone hand, clobbering 14 fours and three sixes before getting out in the 48th over with victory in sight.

Ryan Whelan (three for 54) and Matt Hunter (three for 38) made inroads but Donkers picked up the key wicket of Bhogal and was arguably the pick of the Kaikorai bowlers.

Johnston was the last out when he was caught and bowled for nine.

Taieri 180
beat Albion 91

Taieri left-armer Marcus Frost starred with five for 28 in a 89-run win against Albion at Brooklands Park.

Frost and Regan Flaws (four for 38) teamed up to help dismiss Albion for a miserly 91.

Otago pace bowler Warren Barnes picked up the other wicket. He struck with his second ball to remove opener Charlie O’Brien.

Four of Albion’s top five batsmen recorded ducks and only Josh Tasman-Jones provided any resistance with 33.

Earlier, Taieri had reached a middling total of 180. Jarrod Casey top-scored with 43 and Frost made 37 in a very good match for the experienced campaigner.

Josh Cuttance did his part with the ball for Albion, taking six for 67.
