Former Black Caps and Otago coach Mike Hesson is one of the many New Zealanders boxed in by Covid-19.

Hesson is the director of cricket at the Royal Challengers Bangalore and was gearing up for the 13th edition of the lucrative Indian Premier League.

He declined an interview request when contacted for comment. But the Otago Daily Times understands he has basically been trapped in India since the country went into lockdown late last month.

The IPL was initially scheduled to get under way on March 29, then delayed until April 15 and it has now been suspended until further notice.

Flights out are nearly impossible to get so he is stranded.

Hesson splits his time between India and his home in Dunedin, where his daughters, Holly (13) and Charlie (9), are based.

While Hesson was reluctant to comment, he did give an interview to an India media outlet in late March.

He told Sportstar he was using the lockdown period to learn more about Indian culture.

"I am starting to learn a couple of languages. When you are fully immersed in life, it takes a back seat. I am trying to change myself and trying to learn a little bit of the local languages," he said.

"I am learning Hindi and also a bit of Kannada. It’s a difficult language for sure, but I am trying my best to learn it."

There might be no cricket but there is still work to get through. He has been watching clips and planning for the season as if it will go ahead.

He added he has been well looked-after by the franchise and was keeping busy by staying fit.

"It is very important. I try and cook some meals, that takes a bit of time. Then I read some books, talk to my girlfriend. That’s how it has been."

He also calls his daughters "at least twice a day".

"I would have loved being at home with my girls but that’s not possible. Everyone is in a difficult position now."
