India have wrapped up a 197-run win over New Zealand in the first cricket test at Kanpur's Green Park.

New Zealand fought hard into the afternoon session with notable contributions from Luke Ronchi, who hit 80 off 120 balls, and Mitchell Santner with 71, his test best score, off 179 balls, as they shared a 102-run stand.

However New Zealand were dismissed for 236, giving India their 14th home test win against New Zealand, who are still chasing their third win there in 32 attempts.

In the end India, and their classy offspinner Ravi Ashwin would not be denied.

Ashwin finished with six for 132, fittingly dismissing the last three batsmen to complete a bag of 10 wickets for the match, in which he became the second fastest bowler ever to 200 wickets.

The second test starts in Kolkata on Friday.
