Black Caps left-armer Trent Boult has not done the calculation on how many nights he will spend away from home this year.It will be a lot though.

He will leave for the Indian Premier League shortly after the Black Caps’ home season.

Then there is a trip to England for a two-test series, the World Test Championship final at Lord’s in June and the ICC T20 World Cup in India
"The talk is ...  the 31st of March through to December 9 or something like that," Boult said.

"With two young grommets at home, a wife and a dog, it is going to be an interesting one to work through."

It is going to be busy period for the 31-year-old but he is not complaining. Boult was in Dunedin over the weekend, making a rare outing for the Northern Knights in a Super Smash match.

The fixture he is looking forward to more than any other is the inaugural World Test Championship final.

The Black Caps’ spot in the fixture was confirmed last week.

"Test cricket is undoubtedly my favourite format. It is the one I’ve got the most desire and passion for.

"I’ve got a lot of good friends in the test group and to get another crack at Lord’s on a big stage like that — I try not to talk about the last experience — means a lot and not just for me but for all the guys."

That other final he is talking about is the One-Day World Cup final against England in 2019.

A quick refresher — the game was tied and the sides could not be separated again after a super over decider.

England was crowned champions on a boundary countback.

It is obviously still a bit raw. But listening to Boult it is nothing a World Test Championship title would not fix.

It is unclear who New Zealand will meet in the fixture. India, England and Australia are still in contention.

Whoever it is, New Zealand will have a decent build-up. It plays England in two tests leading into the final and it will be a valuable opportunity to get in some practice with the Duke ball.

"I haven’t used one for three and a-half years so that is not ideal. That is the unique thing about a championship like this. There are three or four different balls being used around the world and when it comes to a final and you are using a ball you have not used in a long time, so it can be foreign.

"I don’t want to use it as an excuse but it is a rule which I think should be addressed."

Let’s hope it swings.

Comments

He may not have to worry about the ball. Overseas, NZ will have to play a proper spinner and on form over the last 18 months Boult should be the most likely seamer to make room.
