Taieri torn like tissue by Johnston

CDK 148 beat Taieri 35 by 113 runs

Eight-wicket bags are a bit ho-hum for Kurt Johnston.

The Carisbrook-Dunedin/Kaikorai pace bowler added a second eight-for to his collection as he guided the Hounds to a crushing win over Taieri in a Dunedin premier club game at Brooklands on Saturday.

Johnston was on the losing team four years ago when he took eight for 76 for Carisbrook-Dunedin — against Kaikorai, funnily enough, before the clubs joined forces — but there was never any doubt about this result.

Johnston simply tore Taieri to shreds, claiming eight for 16 (four maidens) off nine brutal overs to dismiss the opposition for a paltry 35 in 18 overs.

Four of his scalps were bowled and three lbw, indicating the home side just could not handle his pace and movement in the conditions.

CDK had earlier made a moderate total of 148 from 45.1 overs.

Sebastian Kyle (31), Vinay Chandrappa (29) and Mason Gain (25) made useful runs, while Sam Duff led the Taieri attack with three for 16 off 10 overs.

Green Island 94 lost to University-Grange 95 for none by 10 wickets

Andrew Hazeldine might need to convince the Volts selectors he is an option as an opening batter, while Otago opener Jacob Cumming could put his hand up for more bowling duties.

Hazeldine has an Otago contract but the seam bowler has not yet been required this summer, so he has been restricted to club duties.

He made the most of it on Saturday as he opened the batting for University-Grange and propelled the club to a dominant win at Logan Park.

Hazeldine thrashed 60 off just 22 balls, smashing six fours and five sixes alongside Cumming, who added 33 off 28, to seal a 10-wicket victory in just the ninth over.

Earlier, Cumming showed his skills with the ball as he grabbed a five-for to reduce Green Island to 94 in the 29th over.

Cumming took five for 21 off eight overs and Hazeldine contributed two for 14 off eight.

Christi Viljoen — his 26 was made up entirely off boundaries, five fours and a six — and Jed Mockford (18) provided minor resistance for Green Island.

— The game between North East Valley and Albion was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Women’s League

Caitlin Blakely stroked 72 off 76 balls to guide the Storm to a 16-run win over the Lightning.

Blakely, who has been in good form for the Sparks, hit just two boundaries in her knock, while Bridget Thayer provided a late boost with an unbeaten 24 off 23 balls as the Storm posted 181 for nine off 40 overs.

In reply, Harriet Cuttance (23) and Megan Meltzer (20) got handy starts as the Lightning was dismissed for 165 in the 33rd over.

Emily Hickey (three for 20), Elise Carline (two for nine) and Blakely (two for seven) were the best of the Storm bowlers.
