Football: Fans to fly north for final

They will be playing 1000km away from the Caledonian but Dunedin Technical players will not lack for support in the Chatham Cup final next month.

When Technical plays East Coast Bays in the final at North Harbour Stadium on September 13, it will run out to the cheers of a vocal group of fans.

The club arranged a supporters' travel package soon after it beat Glenfield Rovers last weekend to progress to the final.

"I managed to get 30 seats, which I filled in no time at all," club president Stephen Dunn said yesterday.

"Virgin Blue gave us a pretty good price. We've got 20 more people who want to go but the next lot of seats are a bit more expensive."

The first supporters to book seats were mainly club people and family members, Dunn said.

"There's a good mix of people and it will be great to have them there cheering for the team.

"I'd be disappointed if we didn't also get a few other fans up there. There are quite a number of ex-Dunedin football people in the Auckland area and I'm sure they'll come out of the woodwork."

Dunedin Technical managed to draw home games for both its quarterfinal and semifinal and will, oddly, be considered the home team at Albany.

New Zealand Football deems the stadium to be neutral, so makes a random draw to determine which team gets the pick of the dressing rooms.

Dunedin Technical won.
