Northern will be joining the Dunedin City Royals and Wānaka in the Southern League next year.

They dispatched Halswell United 3-0 in the Southern League playoff at Logan Park on Saturday and recorded a comfortable 4-1 win in Christchurch a week earlier.

They advanced 7-1 on aggregate.

It capped off a tremendous season for the club.

They won all 18 games this season.

Striker Rory Hibbert banged in two goals to help set up the win on Saturday.

That took his season tally to 31 goals.

He has been clinical up front for Northern, and he opened the scoring in the 23rd minute.

The goalkeeper was pressured off his line and Hibbert sent the last defender the wrong way and slotted the ball into the net.

He nabbed his second 10 minutes into the second half. The ball broke nicely for him in the box and he plugged the bottom right-hand corner.

A few minutes later, Halswell registered an own goal.

Despite trailing 3-0, they showed plenty of character and had the better of the final quarter of the game.

They could not find a goal, though.

Northern keeper Eli Urwin kept a clean sheet in terrible conditions.

He was put under plenty of pressure but was up to the challenge, and Northern captain Luka Mandich was solid and snuffed out attack after attack.

That gave Northern a base to push forward from when an opportunity arose.

Club stalwart and secretary Terry Hibbert — father of marksman Rory — said it was a great result for the club but also for top footballers in Dunedin.

"Now there’s more than one option for them to play in the Southern League," he said.

"We’ll need a bigger budget than this year. But as for how big that will be, we don’t know yet. We’ve not started that work yet."
