Football: Floodlit rarity at Carisbrook

Carisbrook will be the venue for a rare floodlit football match tonight between Dunedin Technical and Roslyn-Wakari.

The match, kicking off at 7.45pm, will be the first in the Otago Daily Times Soccersouth Premier League to be played under lights at the stadium.

A backlog of end-of-season fixtures has caused Soccersouth to take the unusual step, although in the past some floodlit football has been played at Logan Park in the rugby training area.

Invercargill has also hosted several Friday evening floodlit matches at Rugby Park Stadium.

Dunedin's De Carle Park is in the process of having new floodlights erected, but that project has fallen behind its original schedule.

While Caversham clinched the SPL championship last weekend after 15 matches, Dunedin Technical still has two league matches to play, as well as a Chatham Cup final on September 13.

The cup final will still be Technical's main priority, yet coach Mike Fridge would be loath to miss out on possible South Island Championship matches.

Technical and Roslyn-Wakari are vying to join Caversham in the championship series which will include games against Mainland's top two teams, Nelson and Nomads.

Roslyn is three points ahead of Technical with 34 points from 14 games, while Technical has 31 points from 13 games.

A drawn match at Carisbrook would be good enough for Roslyn to qualify.

However, Mike Eisenhut's recent injury precludes him from playing for Roslyn and coach Terry Boylan's hardy utility, Sean Brand, reportedly has accrued five yellow cards and is likely to be suspended.

Technical's large first-team pool is capable of resting its injured striker Aaron Burgess, and still fielding a similar team to that which beat Mosgiel 7-nil last weekend.
