Football: Fridge sticks with successful line-up

Southern United coach Mike Fridge has resisted making any changes to his team for its ASB Premiership match against WaiBOP United tomorrow.

The Dunedin-based side is searching for its second win under the roof at Forsyth Barr Stadium in as many weeks, after edging Wellington Phoenix 1-0 last Sunday.

Fridge welcomed back a few players from injury at training during the past week, but decided against rushing any of them into the matchday team.

Forward Josh Stewart (calf) and defenders Ross Howard (groin) and Craig Ferguson (knee) have not yet seen any action this season, but came through the team's three training sessions in good shape.

Only midfielder Stu Kelly, who took a knock to his ankle in a 3-0 defeat to Hawkes Bay a couple of weeks ago, was unavailable for selection.

But Fridge has opted to stick with the same group that earned three crucial league points last week.

''It's great to get the guys back, but I'm not rushing them back. The physio has had a quieter week than he has had in the past,'' Fridge said.

It is a big turn around from two weeks ago, when Southern United had eight players unavailable, through injury and personal commitments, against Hawkes Bay.

Tomorrow's game is the first of five involving Southern United to be televised live on Sky Sport, and gives the team an opportunity to play in front of more people than usual.

''It adds a little bit of spice to it. It's great,'' Fridge said.

Southern United and WaiBOP United are two of four teams with three competition points in a congested table.

WaiBOP United won the corresponding fixture between the sides 1-0 a year ago, and the winner of tomorrow's match could be sitting inside the top four by the end of the weekend.

The visiting side hammered Waitakere United 5-1, but conceded late goals in a 3-2 loss to Wellington and 1-0 loss to Hawkes Bay in its first three games of the season.

Fridge is expecting another tough match, and is eyeing up the opportunity to make a big leap up the competition standings.

''It's amazing what a win does - it keeps everybody buzzing,'' he said.

''It's going to be tight, but that's the incentive - build on a good performance from last week and another win would climb us higher up the table again.''

To get the win, Southern United is probably going to have to have to sharpen up in front of goal.

Through three games, it has scored only one goal compared with the five it has conceded.

Entry to the game is through gate D by gold coin donation.

Parking at the stadium is also being provided free of charge.
