Wellington Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert is "delighted" his team will get the chance to play at Dunedin's Forsyth Barr Stadium when they take on reigning A-League champions Brisbane Roar in a friendly.
Herbert was commenting after the August 20 pre-season game at the new roofed venue was confirmed today. The Saturday game will kick off at 5.30pm.
"Dunedin hasn't had an opportunity to host international football or a professional team for some time so it is good we are going there," he said.
Phoenix chief executive Nathan Greenham said he was thrilled to secure the fixture.
"The prospect of playing in the new venue is exciting and I believe Dunedin people will come out in force and make it a fantastic occasion."
Rugby union will get first use of the stadium when Meads Cup champion North Otago plays West Coast in the Heartland competition match on August 7.
Otago's first game at the stadium will be against Manawatu on August 17. The venue is hosting four Rugby World Cup games in September and October.
Sir Elton John will perform at the stadium on November 25.
