Football: Tech eases to win in final tune-up

Dunedin Technical eased to a 1-0 win against Queenstown at the weekend to prepare for its date with Chatham Cup destiny.

The result was fairly meaningless in the context of the premier league, which Caversham wrapped up a week ago.

For Tech, the game in Queenstown was more about fine-tuning before Saturday's Chatham Cup final against East Coast Bays in Auckland.

Richard Smith scored the only goal of Saturday's game.

In five days, Dunedin Technical will try to win the Chatham Cup nine years after it thumped Waitakere 4-0 at North Harbour Stadium.

Mosgiel beat Green Island 4-1 in the only other premier league game played on Saturday, with Alistair Rickerby scoring twice and Regan Coldicott and Nick Cape getting the other goals.

Liam Dungey scored for Green Island.

While Dunedin Technical was in Queenstown, its reserve side was copping a 6-0 thrashing from Caversham in the quarterfinals of the Soccersouth knock-out cup.

Robbie Deeley and Dave Dugdale both scored twice for Caversham, which led 4-0 after the first 45min. Tim Cook and Tom Jackson added the other goals.

In an odd coincidence, two other quarterfinals also ended in 6-0 scorelines, with Northern thumping Otago Boys and Roslyn-Wakari smashing University.

Veteran striker Jim Headley scored twice for Northern.

Mosgiel was made to work harder for its 2-0 win against Grants Braes.

In the knock-out semifinals on Saturday, Northern will play Roslyn-Wakari and Caversham will play Mosgiel.
