After seven years at miserly Arsenal, Toure joined the biggest spending club in England, and said he was convinced City would soon emerge from the shadow of neighbor Manchester United to challenge for a title it has not won since 1968.
"That's why I'm here. The team wants to progress to make sure that we go to the top of the league," said the 28-year-old Ivory Coast defender, who joined City for £14 million on Wednesday. "That's a really good objective and I am on board now and I will do everything I can to put the team on the top."
Toure said he had no regrets leaving Arsenal, the club he helped win its last Premier League title in 2004, and said that the cash City was prepared to pay showed the club's strong liking for him.
"I think Arsenal are a really good team, but it was the right time for me to move," he said. "I always think that, when you love a woman and she gives back the love, you are really happy and that's what I can see in Man City. They have given the love and I am really delighted to bring back the love as well."
Having seen neighbor United win the Premier League title the last three years in a row and 11 times in 17 seasons, City has also brought in Carlos Tevez, who was on loan at Old Trafford, Emmanuel Adebayor from Arsenal, Roque Santa Cruz from Blackburn and Gareth Barry from Aston Villa in a summer spending spree. It is also trying to persuade Everton to part with center back Joleon Lescott after failing to get John Terry from Chelsea.
"There are some fantastic players here. We are going to work to be at the top and the manager will help us to win," Toure said. "There are still a lot of years in my football and I want to show more than what I have shown already. Last season we are in the middle of the table. We will try and be in the top six or four, that would be fantastic."
City manager Mark Hughes said his club had made an improved, £18 million bid for Lescott.
"We have already done that. By all accounts Everton have rejected that. We will wait and see," said Hughes, whose club sold Brazilian midfielder Elano to Turkish club Galatasaray on Thursday. "We have made no secret of the fact that we want to continue to strengthen the team.
"We're progressing nicely. The business that we've already done is exceptional. We're really pleased with the quality that we've been able to bring up to this point. Obviously, there's still quite a way to go until the window actually closes and we will get opportunities and see what we can bring. They will have to be top-quality players to improve us."
