Nobody knows that better than Dunedin footballer James McGarry, who had a forgettable match in New Zealand's agonising 1-0 loss to Brazil at the Fifa Under-17 World Cup in Chile yesterday.
McGarry, who is based in Wellington and signed a three-year deal with the Wellington Phoenix last month, made a couple of costly blunders in the round-of-16 match.
He missed a chance to put New Zealand 1-0 ahead with 25min remaining when he blazed a penalty well over the cross-bar.
But it went from bad to worse in the fourth minute of stoppage time, as the young forward brought down Luis Henrique in the penalty area.
The Brazilian calmly slotted the ball past Kiwi goalkeeper Michael Woud with the last play of the game, to send the New Zealanders packing.
The result means no New Zealand men's side has beaten Brazil.
The under-20 team's 0-0 draw in China last year is the best result to date.
Brazil dominated much of yesterday's match, amassing 25 shots at goal to New Zealand's one.
But the South Americans only managed to get six attempts on target and struggled to break down the stubborn New Zealand resistance.
The All Whites were content to sit back inside their own half for the majority of the match to subdue the three-time winners, instead waiting for opportunities on the counter-attack.
On a rare occasion the Kiwis did push forward, Connor Probert was taken down inside the penalty area on the half-hour mark.
All eyes turned to Malaysian referee Mohd Bin Yacoob, but the Kiwis' calls for a penalty fell on deaf ears.
The All Whites had a bunch of corners in quick succession as regulation wound down, but no-one was able to get on the end of one.
New Zealand Coach Danny Hay said his side was left feeling ''disappointed, devastated and heartbroken.''
''I thought we were hard done by not to get a penalty awarded to us in the first half,'' he said.
''And then obviously got that one in the 65th minute. To miss it was tough but then to concede like we did to a penalty in the last second of the game was difficult.''
Brazil will play Nigeria, which thrashed Australia 6-0 yesterday, in the quarterfinals on Monday.
