Positive day for Dunedin Tech

A cup win and a come-from-behind draw made for an eventful day for Dunedin Technical yesterday.

The club's women's side delivered an emphatic 4-1 win over the Coastal Spirit in its Kate Sheppard Cup quarterfinal in Christchurch.

Meanwhile its men scored late to emerge with a point in its 2-2 draw with Nomads United in the Southern Football League game at the Caledonian Ground.

It was a completely dominant performance in Christchurch, as the Tech women jumped out to an early lead.

The side pressed high up the pitch, turning the ball over in the midfield and counterattacking dangerously.

Emily Morison scored in the third minute, before Kate Guildford made it 2-0 eight minutes later.

The side was in control when it conceded an unlucky goal, cutting the deficit to one at halftime.

However, a completely dominant second half allowed Tech to pull away.

Guildford added a second goal, while Ruby Anderson also scored to help the side through to its second national knockout cup semifinal in as many years.

Meanwhile in Dunedin Taine Bayly gave Tech a lead against Nomads United in the 17th minute, burying a header after a well-placed free kick from Danny Ledwith.

Nomads could have equalised in the 30th minute, but Stephen Hoyle's penalty was saved by great effort from keeper Tom Fitall.

The visitors then had another chance saved just before the break, Fitall this time denying Byron Heath.

Tech's halftime lead was short-lived, though.

Nomads quickly replied with the wind at their back, Hoyle showing his class in a two-minute spurt that yielded two goals.

First he headed in a corner to equalise in the 50th minute, before tapping in a cross from Jacob Anderson to take the lead.

That caused a major shift in momentum; however, Tech was able to finish the stronger of the sides.

It began pushing forward and created more chances in the final 15 minutes.

That eventually resulted in Danny Ledwith being taken down in the box - and a penalty - after being put into space behind the defence in the 82nd minute.

Andy Coburn dispatched the penalty into the bottom right corner of the net.

In the other Southern Football League game, hosts Queenstown beat Southland United 2-1 in an exciting finish.

Queenstown took the lead eight minutes into the second half, before Southland equalised with six minutes left.

However, Josh Cartman ensured the hosts took the points with a sliding effort to score in the final two minutes.

In the Chatham Cup both Dunedin teams battled hard, but were ultimately undone on tough road trips.

Green Island went behind to a Matt Tod-Smith goal in the 20th minute and despite a strong second half, was beaten 1-0 by Nelson Suburbs.

Meanwhile Roslyn Wakari were beaten 2-0 by a strong Cashmere Technical side.
