Richie McCaw did it all in rugby and has since emerged as a more than useful multisporter.

Now it is time to see if the revered former All Black can cut it on the fairways and greens.

McCaw was yesterday announced on the roster of ambassadors for the New Zealand Open, teeing off at Millbrook on February 27.

The two-time Rugby World Cup-winning captain loves his golf and is looking forward to playing in the pro-am format as part of the Open’s rich sporting history.

"I’m thrilled to be a part of the New Zealand Open," McCaw said.

"Golf has always been a sport I love, and to be able to play alongside the professionals as they duke it out for our national title is really exciting.

"While my heart lies in rugby, I’ve always had a deep appreciation for golf and I’m looking forward to supporting this incredible tournament."

The other headliner is returning for a second year as ambassador but just as a spectator this time.

Ash Barty was a terrific tennis player — the Australian had a spell at No 1 in the world — but is also an exceptional golfer.

She had an "amazing experience" at the Open last year and will return to Arrowtown as a non-playing ambassador.

"Last year was fantastic," Barty said.

"I really connected with the tournament and being in Queenstown is always special.

"The hospitality and friendliness of everyone involved is second to none and always so welcoming.

"While I won’t be teeing it up this year, I am thrilled to be coming back to one of my favourite sporting events, spending time with volunteers and the incredible people who bring this event together."

Australian cricket great Ricky Ponting will be back for his eighth New Zealand Open and is looking forward to his "favourite week of the year".

Other returning ambassadors are former Black Caps captain Stephen Fleming, former All Blacks fullback Israel Dagg and Otago sporting great Jeff Wilson.

Newcomers are star rally driver Hayden Paddon and long-serving basketballer Tom Abercrombie.

"We’re incredibly proud to have such a remarkable group of ambassadors supporting the New Zealand Open," tournament chairman John Hart said.

"They bring not only diverse backgrounds and international appeal to the tournament which helps us engage with a wide audience, but their love of golf aligns perfectly with the New Zealand Open." — APL
