Golf: Alker makes slow start in Mexico

Hamilton golfer Steven Alker has fired a three-over-par 75 during the opening round of the Mexico Championship on the Web.com Tour.

Alker, who came into the tournament in a share of 96th on the second-tier tour's order of merit, had three birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey during a mixed round today.

The 42-year-old finished the day in a share of 91st place, nine strokes back from co-leaders Brad Schneider and Justin Thomas, who began with a six-under 66.

Alker will look for a better effort in his second round as he strives to make the cut at the El Bosque Golf Club in Leon.
