Golf: Otago schoolboys dominant in triangular event

Otago schoolboys continued to dominate the annual triangular fixture, beating Aorangi 9-1 and Southland 9.5-0.5 on the Cromwell course yesterday.

Otago retained the Piper Cup in the Aorangi match and the Ben McCorkindale memorial trophy from Southland, winning 18 of the 20 matches with one half and a single loss.

Aorangi was too strong for Southland, winning 9-1 to retain the Simpson Cup.

One disappointing aspect of this year's tournament was that Southland came to the event with only four juniors for a 10-man team.

This is in sharp contrast to the success of the Southland senior team which won the interprovincial title in Gisborne last year.

Otago assisted its southern neighbour by providing its reserve and five other schoolboy golfers to allow the fixture to proceed.

This enhanced Otago junior golf as they featured well on the scoreboard with five wins and a half against Aorangi.

However, it is a sad indictment as there have been close contests in the past since the Piper Cup began against the then South Canterbury province in 1962.

The Ben McCorkindale trophy against Southland started in 1988 and, although Otago has been dominant, there have been many nail-biting finishes over the years.

It is hoped Otago's nearest neighbour gets busy with junior development, as the Otago programme, under the guidance of Sport Otago co-coach Michael Smith, is going from strength to strength.
