Golf: Red and blacks wun easily

As expected, Canterbury won the Freyberg Rosebowl Masters (over-40) men's event with eight points from as many rounds in a week-long tournament that finished yesterday on the Levin course.

The red and blacks were in a section that gave them some easy games this year and, with a bye in the last round, they were able to celebrate their victory while other teams fought out the other places.

Wellington finished second with 6.5 points and Otago came in third with 6 points but neither team had the opportunity to play Canterbury.

Otago had its second draw of the tournament yesterday morning against a determined Bay of Plenty team with the two unbeaten players both going down.

Stephen Hitchcox (No2) suffered his first loss and ended the week with 6.5 games from eight outings.

Chisholm Park's Kyle Geary came into the final day as the only player to have won all his games but lost on the final green to former New Zealand representative Terry Cochrane.

This gave Geary seven wins for the week, while Andrew Hobbs scored 5.5 games in the No1 position.

Oamaru greenkeeper Gary Creedy won six games at No4, while team manager Greg Johnson gave as good as he got with four wins at No3.

Masters golf is enjoying a resurgence in the province, with several golfers now meeting the age criteria. This year's third may be a sign of things to come.
