Golf: Taieri, Otago A in final

Taieri will play Otago A in the inter-club pennants final at Balmacewen in two weeks' time after beating North Otago 4-2 at Taieri on Saturday.

Masters golfer Gary Creedy (North Otago) won the final hole to beat Brett Kennelly 2-up in a battle of the No 3 golfers.

Kennelly has an enviable record in pennant matchplay and his loss to Creedy was his first defeat in three years.

But Paul Velenski, at No 5, was the only other Oamaru golfer to post a win.

He beat former Chisholm Park golfer Matt Heaton on the 17th green.

Ken Shaw and Brian Shaw both notched wins for Taieri with two holes to spare, while Matt Lee (No 6) had a resounding 6 and 5 win over Gary Watling.

This meant North Otago could square the encounter by winning the battle of the No 1 players - Mark Andrews and Michael Ormandy.

However, with good margins for Taieri in its three winning games, a 3-3 draw would still put the Mosgiel team in the final.

Ormandy held the lead going into the final holes, but Andrews parred the par-5 15th to get back to square.

He birdied the 16th with a 3 to take the lead and the pair halved the next hole when Andrews three-putted.

After recovering from behind a tree on the final hole, Andrews got up and down for a par 5 to halve the final hole and win the match.
