Golf: Team rises to the challenge

Despite the loss of the No1, Samson Kim, two weeks ago, the Wakatipu golf team won the Otago intercollegiate final by a nine-shot margin on the Kelvin Heights course on Friday.

Sungwoo Han and Edward Cochrane were returnees from last year's winning team and were expected to perform well. They finished on 74 and 76 respectively.

But the bonus for Wakatipu were the performances of Ben Harford and Terry Kim, who both turned square with par, setting up a runaway victory for the local team.

Harford finished on 77 and Kim on 75, leaving Otago Boys' High School in second place. Waitaki Boys' came third a further nine shots back and Cromwell College was fourth another stroke behind.

Wakatipu will now go forward to the national schools final, to be played on the Coringa course in Christchurch in September.

Cody McMullan (Otago Boys') carded the lowest score of the day with a par 72, but he turns 17 in early September, which precludes him

competing in the national Eagles final.

Sungwoo Han and Terry Kim claim the two boys' places in the under-17 event, and Abigael Crawford (South Otago) will compete in the girls' section.
