Manawatu-Wanganui beat Otago 3-2 in the morning and Hawkes Bay won by the same score in the afternoon.
Otago No 1 Laura Hoskin was unbeaten with wins over Brydie Hodge and Kate Chadwick on the opening day.
In the morning, Hoskin lost the first hole due to tree trouble, but birdied the fifth and turned all square. She finished strongly, winning the 15th and 16th to take the honours.
In the afternoon, Hoskin won the first two first holes, turned 3-up and birdied 10, 11 and 15 for a 5 and 3 win.
Otago's other unbeaten player was Susan Greig, who also had two wins on the opening day.
Her first opponent, Manawatu's Amber-Rose Thompson-Newth, birdied the first three holes, putting Greig on the back foot and she turned 1-down. However, she won five of the next seven holes to take the honours.
In the afternoon, Greig beat Angela Jones 4 and 3. A feature of her match was holing out from 140m for an eagle 2.
South Otago schoolgirl Abby Crawford (16) had a tough day, losing the first three holes to Emma Clayton and turning 5-down in her debut match.
In the afternoon, she lost to Janie McIvor in 13 holes after turning 3-down. At No 4, Sally Shaw lost in 15 holes in the morning after turning 4-down. In the afternoon, she turned 3-behind and did not make up the deficit on the homeward nine.
Liz McRae was 2-down after four holes in her morning match again Karen Manninen. She turned 4-down, was square at the turn, but lost the final two holes to lose on the 17th green.
In the afternoon, she turned 4-down against Kathy Olsen and never got back into the contest.
North Harbour got off to a perfect start yesterday. The home side, which last won the event in 2010 at Miramar when Lydia Ko was the player of the tournament, opened with wins over Aorangi South Canterbury (4-1) and Canterbury (3-2).
North Harbour looks particularly strong at the top of its team. New Zealand representatives Lita Guo and Sai Ma were the side's two dominant players on day one.
Guo was 1-down at the turn in her crucial match against Canterbury No 1 Elisha Crosbie before she rallied to keep the home province undefeated and secure a crucial 3 and 2 win for North Harbour to win 3-2.
