"Retired" professionals Greg Turner and Mahal Pearce teamed up to show the amateur pairs how it is done, winning the Otago foursomes title which was played over 36 holes at Chisholm Links yesterday.

The pair carded a two-under-par 69 in the morning round followed by a one-over 72 in the afternoon.

This gave them an eight-shot win, ahead of Southland pair Leith Campion and Jeremy Hall.

Four Otago pairs were two shots further back on 151.

The professional pair started as favourites, with a total of three New Zealand Open titles between them.

Turner’s first title was in 1989. He won his second open eight years later, in 1997.

Pearce won his New Zealand Open title on the Grange course in Auckland in 2003.

Jakob Bleach and Connor Ross finished in a tie for third before being selected in the Otago under-19 team to play in Cambridge in late September.

Local masters players Kyle and Sean Geary also came in the tie for third, with Matthew Crawford and Jeff Bisset and Brandon Hodgson and Duncan Croudis.

The reinstatement of the foursomes event has proved a popular move but one disappointing aspect is the lack of women’s pairs.

Tracey Storer and Brenda Sutherland were the only women’s pair while St Clair junior Abigael  Crawford paired up with Callum Black to win a prize.
