Semifinalists to play today

Duncan Croudis will play Jack Turner while former Southland No1 Scott Hellier will meet Brandon Hodgson in the semifinals of the Otago men’s match play championship, which will be played on the Balmacewen course this morning.

Croudis qualified top and beat Ryan Shuttleworth and Ben Patston by solid margins on his way to the final four.

Turner beat his fellow Queenstown junior Callum Judkins on the final green of the first round and beat Sungwoo Han in 16 holes in the afternoon.

Hodgson snuck into the semis with two last-green wins over Matt Tautari and Michael Smith, while Scott Hellier accounted for Ryan Bellamy and Kyle Clark.

There was some fierce match play in the first round, with six narrow winning margins — only Croudis (with 5 and 4) and Smith (with 3 and 2) won before the final two holes.

The upset of the first round was when Cromwell junior Kyle Clark went four under par to beat Southland’s Liam Balneaves by 2 and 1.
