Hockey: Juniors beat Germany, finish ninth

The Junior Black Sticks pipped host country Germany 2-1 to finish ninth at the Junior World Cup in Germany yesterday.

The New Zealand women dominated the first half, although converting opportunities proved difficult.

Goalkeeper Georgia Barnett made several critical saves from German shots before a stunning goal to the near post from Michaela Curtis gave New Zealand the advantage.

Led by standout players Brooke Neal and Rhiannon Dennison, the Junior Black Sticks continued to build pressure while Germany became frustrated and struggled to get through the defence.

Two minutes into the second half, the Junior Black Sticks pulled further ahead when Erin Goad converted from a penalty corner.

Two goals down, Germany desperately attempted to mount a comeback and play became a lot less one-sided.

German captain Rebecca Grote scored 10 minutes into the half to pull her side right back into the game, but New Zealand held firm and denied the host nation any further opportunities.

The Junior Black Sticks finished ninth overall with four wins, one draw and one loss.
