Whales stun Tuataras to take hold of shield

The University Whales stunned Taieri 3-2 on Saturday to end the Tuataras’ Challenge Shield reign of over three years.

After a cagey first quarter, the game livened up in the second with a slick Whales counter-attack finished off by Jono Hair.

Questions will be asked of the defending, but it was yet another example of what the 2026 Whales are capable of if given time and space.

With the lead, the Whales’ tails were up, as they remained competitive in an end-to-end contest which featured both keepers being tested.

Taieri found the game’s next goal, as Oliver Battrick converted a stroke with 38 seconds to go in the third quarter, setting up a blockbuster final quarter.

To win games like this, you need a bit of luck, and to the credit of the Whales, they created their own.

They forced a penalty corner, which Jakob Bell-Kake was able to sneak in by flicking it through traffic with a heap of power.

Three minutes later, Kurt Ward doubled the lead with a deflection from close range, leaving Taieri with a challenge ahead.

Champion teams do not go down lightly, though, and Ryan Smith scrapped one in at the back post with just under four minutes on the clock to give the Tuataras hope.

Taieri pressed in the closing stages, and were able to force another penalty corner, but Hugh Nixon stayed composed, making a good save with his right foot to keep the Tuas at bay.

Not only did the Whales walk away with the shield, but the result has them as the shock league leaders through the first completed round of fixtures with a single outright win separating them and fourth-placed Albany.

The grade has never been so tight.

Elsewhere in the premier men’s grade, the Kings United Cobras ground their way to a 4-1 win over the University Panthers after conceding the game’s first goal, while Albany thrashed the Southland Barbarians 8-0.

While it was a great day for their top men’s side, the same cannot be said for University’s top women’s side, as the Huskies shipped seven first-quarter goals in an 8-0 loss to the Kings United Royals.

Every time you turned around to look, there was another ball flying into the back of the net for the Royals, who surely could not believe it themselves.

There will be a tinge of disappointment that they were only able to get one more goal after their electric start, but if they were offered that scoreline before the game, they would have absolutely taken it.

That result lifted Kings above the Huskies but only into third as Momona continued their quietly decent start to the season with a 5-2 win over the Taieri Tigers.

It was a bit of a scrappy contest, but Sorrell Shand enjoyed a day out, putting away four goals.

The pace-setting City Highlanders eased to a 4-1 win over the University Stingrays.
