Many fixtures rescheduled

Many of the city's sporting codes have opted to reschedule fixtures called off at the weekend due to heavy rain and flooding in the region.

Otago Hockey was forced to postpone all premier hockey but acting general manager Adam Walker said a decision had been reached to replay the round.

It will push back the end of the season from August 5 to August 12 to fit the games in.

''It is not ideal to have to do that,'' Walker said.

''But on reflection we have too many issues, especially with our premier competition being quite close at the top.

''This actually gives all the teams a fair and equal opportunity that they would have got if it wasn't for the rain.''

Football South chief executive Chris Wright said it had lost three weekends this winter but ''we think we can finish all the competitions''.

''If there are any more [weather disruptions] we will have to get creative.''

The end of the football season is scheduled for September 9, so there is still time to squeeze in make-up games but it will be tight, Wright acknowledged.

All Saturday netball was cancelled and Dunedin Netball is yet to decide whether the premier A, B and C games will be rescheduled. There is talk the games may be played in early August but nothing has been confirmed.

Otago Secondary Rugby Council chairman Murray Munro said there was no room on the calendar to reschedule the Otago premier school rugby games.

''The weather has been against us,'' Munro said.

The top-six round has had two of its five rounds cancelled and that has impacted on ''some teams' chances of making the semifinals.

''But our schools programme is just too busy to bring in a mid-week round so we just have to take the cancellation on the chin at this time of the season.''

There is one round left before the semifinals and three teams are confirmed in the playoffs.

King's High School has secured top billing no matter the result against Mt Aspiring College this weekend.

John McGlashan College and South Otago High School are both through as well and will play each other in a dress rehearsal for the semifinals on Saturday.

Waitaki Boys' High School still has an opportunity of slipping past Otago Boys' High School 2nd XV and nabbing the final semifinal spot but it will be a daunting challenge. It has to win with a bonus point while denying Otago Boys' a bonus point.

That will leave the sides tied on 34 points but Waitaki Boys' would progress as it would have secured one more flag point in the games between the two sides.
