Otago trio named in NZ men’s under-21 squad

Three Otago players have been named in the New Zealand men’s under-21 squad.

Zachary Mason, James Nicolson and Finn Ward have selected in a 27-strong squad.

The side also includes new Black Stick Sean Findlay, who was recently named under-21 player of the year at the Hockey New Zealand Awards.

The women’s squad features five Black Sticks in Kaitlin Cotter, Katie Doar, Hope Ralph, Anna Crowley and Olivia Shannon.

The squads were named following the recent three-match under-21 North versus South series in Hamilton.

The players will be preparing for the Junior World Cups later this year.

Hockey New Zealand performance network manager Simon Brill said the series was a successful way to restart a programme which has had few opportunities recently.

“Competition opportunities are an essential part of a player’s long-term development," he said.

"It gives us a chance to check in against the best in the world at this level."
