Whales continue successful start to season

University Blue Whales continued their early-season winning run on Saturday.

They eased to a 3-0 win in their challenge shield match over  previously undefeated Taieri in the men’s premier club competition. The Whales have been clear frontrunners so far this season, having played the other top sides and winning all their games. It did not take too long for the pressure the baby blues were able to exert to pay off as striker Henry Will drove a drag flick into the net from their first penalty corner.

As with some of their previous games this season, the students appeared to ease off a little after this goal and Taieri tried to take advantage. The Tuataras won several penalty corners and even a stroke, but Whales keeper Simon Morbey made a couple of excellent saves to keep them out.

University was able to refocus after this strong defensive effort and retook control of the match. Kailin Dayal doubled the lead from close range after a slick build-up.

The second half continued in the same vein as the first, as the Whales controlled the majority of possession.  The Tuataras were able to create chances but were not able to change  the momentum of the game and Uni collected a third goal to seal the victory.

In the other match, Albany beat Uni Black 8-0 while Kings United had the bye.
