There were mismatches and even games as the Dunedin club competition started its season on Saturday.

Many students were missing on Saturday because of holidays, which left some teams with holes to fill.

In the opening games in the men’s grade, the Taieri Tuataras had a convincing 11-0 win over the University Panthers while the University Blue Whales beat the Albany Alligators 3-2.

The Alligators led 2-1 at the break and were linking well. But the students came back into the match and managed to find some space.

The side scored two field goals in the second half to win the match.

Nick Parata played well up front for the Alligators, while Henry Will was impressive for the students as they came back into the match.

Taieri was on fire and played well throughout, although the students were down on players.

Finn Ward and James Nicolson tallied hat tricks and Jared Casey scored a brace as the side led 6-0 at the break.

In the women’s grade, the University Huskies beat Taieri 5-0 after it led 1-0 at the break.

Defending champion Momona was up 3-0 against the University Stingrays at halftime, however, the Stingrays came back in the second half to draw 3-3.

Momona won the shoot-out.

City Highlanders won a tight game over Kings United 3-0.

Kings had chances but did not get any rewards. City led 1-0 at the break.

Brook Eddie played well and worked hard while goalkeeper Ginny Wilson was impressive in her position for the City Highlanders.
