The Southern Stampede has its sights set on a Queenstown final in the New Zealand Ice Hockey League, but to secure home ice rights it must finish on top of the round-robin competition.

The Stampede leads the competition with 21 points and is followed by the Canterbury Red Devils (18), the Botany Swarm (8), the West Auckland Admirals (7) and the Dunedin Thunder (2).

But the Stampede has a bye next weekend and expects the Canterbury Red Devils to be on top before the final double-header between the leading teams in Queenstown.

There are three more rounds of the round-robin left and the top two teams play in the one-off final at the home base of the leading team.

"Our guys have stepped up and definitely want a home final," Stampede manager Charlie Reid told the Otago Daily Times from Queenstown yesterday.

The two leading teams have both had one loss, but the Stampede also had a draw against the Botany Swarm, of Auckland.

Reid expects the Stampede to win both its games against the West Auckland Admirals in Auckland this weekend.

"We had two wins when we played them in the first round," Reid said.

"But we can't take them for granted."

That round was played in Queenstown and the Stampede won 6-0 and 6-2.

The gap is still expected to be three points after this weekend because the Red Devils are playing the Dunedin Thunder in Christchurch and are expected to get two wins.

The best player on the Stampede team is Simon Glass, who has scored 12 goals this season and has forced his way back into the Ice Blacks for the New Zealand Winter Games.

The other members of the Ice Blacks from the Queenstown-based club are Braden Lee, Brett Speirs, Hayden Argyle and Stacey Rout.

Lee, another key Stampede player, has scored eight goals this winter.

But none of the Stampede players can match the exploits of Red Devils forward Chris Eaden, who has scored 22 goals and made 13 assists.

The Dunedin Thunder is at the bottom of the round-robin table with just one win from its 12 games.
