Ice hockey: Stampede 'going to play everyone'

The Southern Stampede does not have anything to play for this weekend, but that does not mean it will be taking its arch rival lightly.

With home advantage for the national league finals already locked up, the Stampede will play the Dunedin Thunder in its final two regular-season games today and tomorrow.

The Stampede has a bye next weekend, before playing the first of three (if required) finals against Canterbury in Christchurch on August 16.

Stampede captain Bert Haines ruled out resting any players for the Southern derby, as his team looks to sweep the Thunder 4-0.

''We are going to play everyone,'' he said.

''With the bye next weekend, I think it's just as important as ever to make sure everyone gets on the ice this weekend. We've still got things that we want to work on as a team.''

The Stampede beat the Thunder 12-2 and 5-2 in Queenstown earlier in the season, and will finish the season with 15 wins and a sole overtime loss to Canterbury if it wins both games this weekend.

Haines said the team trained with ''real high intensity'' during the week and was focused on finishing the regular season strongly.

''Right now, we haven't lost in regulation,'' he said.

''We have one loss in overtime in Christchurch; we're pretty keen to keep that record. We're not looking past the weekend.

''We have always battled against the Thunder. Even with the fantastic season we're having, we know Dunedin loves playing us and we love playing them. I'd expect to see a couple of close games.''

Haines, the only surviving player from the Stampede's two national title-winning seasons (2005-06), said the team would not start thinking about the finals until next week.

The Thunder will be boosted by Ice Blacks and Melbourne Ice goalie Jaden Pine-Murphy for this weekend's matches.

Pine-Murphy timed visiting his Dunedin family with Melbourne's bye week in the Australian league.

His visit home could not have come at a better time for the Thunder, which can only play import goalie Jakub Pyrochta in 66% of this season's games due to league rules.

Under the rule, Pyrochta can only play one more of the Thunder's final four games.

There is no restriction on how much game time imports in any other position can play.

The Thunder, which has been ravaged by injuries this season, was still in with a chance of making the finals for a third straight year until two losses to the Botany Swarm in Auckland last weekend.

Now, Kaszala is focused on finishing the season strongly and building for the future.

''But we definitely want to prove to everybody that with young Kiwi talent you can be competitive in this league.

''We are obviously giving a lot of ice time to our young guys. Joe Orr, Bradley Apps, Jacob Hurring, George Coslett, Tristan Darling - they're all playing in the top two lines and are 20 years or younger.''
