Ice hockey: Two games to go but eyes firmly on the final

You could forgive the Dunedin Thunder for taking its eyes off the puck this weekend.

It plays the struggling West Auckland Admirals in back-to-back matches in Auckland but the games are effectively dead rubbers.

The Thunder is already through to the national league final, where it will play the defending champions, the Canterbury Red Devils, in the best-of-three series later this month.

It is a rematch of last year's grand final and the series is consuming most of the Thunder's attention this week, despite the need to prepare for two other games.

The Devils complete the round-robin phase with two fixtures against the Southern Stampede in Queenstown.

If they can win one of those two games, they will secure home advantage for two of the three (if required) games in the finals.

If the Devils win both, and the Thunder wins both its games, pole position will be decided by goal differential.

That said, the Thunder's focus is on winning the finals rather than delivering two heavy defeats to the Admirals and snatching home advantage.

The Devils have been the form side and inflicted a major psychological blow on the Thunder in Christchurch last weekend, winning 6-1 and 6-0.

Thunder coach Janos Kaszala said turning that result around would be difficult but not impossible.

''I think the Red Devils have a really experienced line-up and they have the best imports in the league by far and that makes them a really strong team,'' he said.

''But our advantage is we have basically the same team back together for the second year, so we have kind of a better team environment and we have had time to figure out the best lines for the team.''

The Thunder will have to make some changes to those lines, though, given they were comprehensively outplayed by the Devils.

''Our morale is probably not the best after losing two games like we did last weekend. But we are looking forward to the finals matches and they are the ones we want to perform in.

''Last season, we beat the Red Devils in every single game in the regular season but lost the most important game.''

The Devils won the final 7-3 and are looking to extend their title run to the third year.

For the Thunder to win, it will need to find a way to score against the Devils' watertight defence.

''We have to make sure we can match their lines and shut down their best players. And we have to make sure we can start scoring goals again because in the last couple of games, we have struggled to score against the Red Devils.

''I think it could be a little bit psychological as well. They are the defending champions and there is always extra pressure when you go against the champions because, on paper, they are the best team.''
