League: University notches century

University blew Pacific Islands (PI) off the park when it won 106-8 in the third round of the Otago-Southland competition played at the Oval on Saturday.

The University side was too quick and clinical for its southern counterpart, scoring 18 tries to two, in a completely dominant display.

University halfback Antony Stadnyk produced a fine display of kicking by nailing 17 conversions from right across the park for a personal haul of 34 points.

Stadnyk has played the past three weeks after suffering a broken hand earlier in the season, which forced him to sit on the sidelines for two months.

After the game Stadnyk said he was pleased to be back helping his team and that he puts a lot of practice into his kicking.

It has been a real focus lately, he said.

The game was effectively over at halftime, with University outscoring PI nine tries to one and leading 54-4.

University kept PI pinned in their own half and every time the Southland side was penalised. it were punished by a ruthless, fast-paced approach by the students.

The second half was a replay of the first with University scoring nine tries to one and running out an easy winner.

University players to stand out were standoff Johnny Liaina, fullback Grant Milne, prop Tom Bywater and hooker Tom Ellery.

Liaina and Ellery scored three tries each and both had fine games.

The best player for PI was centre Danny Peteru.

He scored two good tries and tried hard all game.

Pacific Islands is a combination of Southland sides Invercargill City and Lone Star Cowboys.

The South Pacific Raiders travelled to Queenstown and beat the Wakatipu Giants 48-26.

The Raiders jumped out to a 28-16 lead at halftime, after the Raiders had trailed the Giants 10-0 after 10 minutes.

Raiders winger Alan Manu and halfback Jonnie Hughes scored two tries each, Giants fullback Arvi Komene had a strong half, scoring two tries.

The Raiders started the second half as they had finished the first, running out to a 44-16 lead, as Manu scored his third try.

The Giants mounted something of a fight back, scoring tries to second-rower Omeka Raimona and winger Aaron Calder before Hughes got his third late in the half to help the Raiders muscle out a good win.

The Raiders halves combination of standoff Tamati Davis and Hughes was strong all game and lock Callum Smith, centre Jermaine Stone and debutant second rower Manu Matapo had fine games.

The Kia Toa Tigers v Winton Warlords match was was abandoned because of snow.
