Motorsport: Cunningham dominates Toyota Racing Series

Auckland's Mitch Cunningham was the class of the Toyota Racing Series (TRS) field at the third round of the 2008/09 series at Invercargill's Teretonga Park over the weekend.

He claimed pole position for two of the three races before winning the feature Spirit of a National Cup race to claim round victory and further extend his lead in the series points standings.

Cunningham, 22, now has 578 points, 52 more than top Australilan driver Scott Pye and 112 more than third placed Sam MacNeill.

Cunningham finished second behind Pye in the rain-interrupted first race which started yesterday evening but was red flagged and concluded this morning.

He then won the 20-lap feature race from William Stevens, Pye and Sam MacNeill before finishing second to one of the other visiting English drivers, William Buller, in the third.

The TRS now heads north for the fourth round at the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport meeting at Taupo with Cunningham keen to keep the momentum going.

"I like Taupo and it's going to be good to be there with the A1 cars. Points, obviously, are still the number one priority but there's nothing like getting pole and winning races."
