Five from South to trial

Five Netball South players will trial for the New Zealand under-21 team later this month.

Southern Steel shooters Jamie Hume and Jennifer O'Connell were among the group, as was defender Abby Erwood. Erwood's twin sister, Sophie, a shooter in the South national development league team, was included, as was promising Southland under-19 shooter Aliyah Dunn.

Several players with transtasman league experience were named in the group, while Silver Fern Maia Wilson brings international experience.

Hume recently had a taste of a higher level, being part of the champion New Zealand Fast5 world series team, as did Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic defender Kelly Jury.

The trials will be held in Auckland on November 24-27 when 29 players will compete for 12 places in the final squad. That squad will travel to Garborone, Botswana, in July next year to play in the Netball World Youth Cup.

The team has drawn in pool A alongside Sri Lanka, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Samoa.

New Zealand will enter the tournament as defending champion, having beaten Australia 52-47 in the final of the previous one four years ago in Glasgow.
