Netball: Defender tipped to join Steel

The Southern Steel is tipped to announce another signing today.

The Otago Daily Times understands the Steel will reveal its ninth player, leaving three spots open on the roster for next year's ANZ Championship.

Few high-profile players remain on the market but it is understood the Steel may have captured a circle defender.

Two of the more promising players around are new Silver Ferns defender Larrissa Willcox and Charlotte Kight, who both played for the Tactix this year.

Or the Steel may be in line to recruit Leana de Bruin, who has not been named in the Magic squad yet and is expecting her first child in November.

A real wildcard could be former Otago defender Anna Scarlett, who is playing for Auckland in the national championship but has previously said she is making beach volleyball, and qualification for the London Olympics, her priority.

The Steel announced last week it had retained experienced Australian and World 7 shooter Megan Dehn pending approval of eligibility from Netball New Zealand.

Dehn played for the Steel in 2008 and was recalled to the side during last season as a replacement for the pregnant Daneka Wipiiti.

The Steel has also retained Wipiiti, Julianna Naoupu, Wendy Telfer, Liana Barrett-Chase, Erika Burgess, Sheryl Scanlan and Te Huinga Reo Selby-Rickit.
