University Albion A recovered from a scrappy start to send another reminder of their strength as the Dunedin premier club competition had a rare Monday round yesterday.

The defending champions beat Southern Magpies 62-34.

Neither side were at full flow in the first quarter, at the end of which Uni Albion led just 14-10.

But Uni Albion clicked into gear from that point, easing away to lead 31-18 at halftime and 46-29 at the three-quarter mark.

‘‘We just kept working away at our structures and what we were aiming to do in the game,’’ Uni Albion coach Megan Graamans said.

‘‘That paid off and we were eventually able to pull away.

‘‘We were aiming to have full-court defensive pressure, which then helped us turn over ball, and on attack we were just trying to be patient and be clear with how we used space as an option.’’

Ella Southby returned from training with the Steel to lead Uni Albion’s attack end in style.

Olivia Mavor, Sasha Tobin and Neve Graamans grew in confidence in the midcourt, and Micky Jones worked hard on defence.

Shooters Genevieve Taua, Harriet Cuttance and Freya Wilson all had their moments when Southern got them the ball, while wing attack Ellie Withers brought nice speed to the Magpies midcourt.

Uni Albion are seeking a fourth straight Dunedin premier club title and Graamans is happy enough with how their defence is taking shape.

‘‘It’s early in the season, and we’ve still got players returning from injury and others away.

‘‘But I’m happy with the intensity that we brought today. There’s still lots to learn, but it’s a good start.’’

Physed A bounced back from a loss on opening day with a 61-37 win over South Pac Titans Taiko.

The students took control early, leading 17-9 at the first break, 33-18 at halftime and 50-27 with a quarter to play.

College A turned on the style in a 76-23 thumping of University Albion B, conceding just four goals in the second quarter and three in the third, and the round finished with Columba College beating South Pac Titans Titi 55-39.
