Does the dress still fit?

Better than ever.

Former Otago netballer Jo Morrison even volunteered to pull on her old 1997 outfit to prove a couple of points.

The first is that she is in excellent shape - she is still playing competitive netball, after having four children.

The second is that she has special pride in the quality of the sewing work on the uniforms that broke new ground in New Zealand in netball 18 years ago.

The identity of the seamstress? Jo Morrison, or Jo Steed as she was then.

''A group of us were having a night out at the Cook,'' Morrison recalled.

''We were watching the tennis on the screen and we saw Anna Kournikova in a really cool dress.

''Vic [Edward] being Vic, said, 'Oooh, that's wicked; we should wear dresses instead of skirts and tops.'

''Being a sewer, I said, 'Shall we go and design something? I can make them and it'll be awesome'.

''I ended up sewing all 12 dresses, fitting them all out of my bedroom in Dundas St.''

Morrison remembers getting CRT to sponsor the cost of the fabric.

Apart from that, all the sewing work was done on her own time.

The blue-and-gold lycra dresses took ''three or four hours'' each to complete.

''Everyone wanted theirs fitted perfectly. The length varied a bit. Quite a few girls wanted short ones but didn't take into account how much they would ride up. Some were probably shorter than they should have been.

''We all got to keep them. I pulled mine out the other day and thought, 'That's not bad sewing, to be fair'.''

The Otago players, on the eve of the remarkable 1998 season in which the Rebels and Otago won 22 straight games and claimed two national titles, caused something of a stir at the time when they unveiled their slinky new dresses.

''Probably because how short some of them were,'' Morrison laughed.

''It was before the Rebels but it set the stage for us to be a bit rebellious. We were a bit off the cuff.''

Morrison and her old team-mates will get plenty of opportunities to reminisce on the days they made their own dresses at the Otago netball centenary celebrations on May 1-2.
