The Steel opens its campaign against the Queensland Firebirds in Invercargill on Sunday and Frew cannot wait.
''It makes me feel old if I count up how many seasons I've played,'' the 29-year-old said.
''But I still feel young and fresh ... bring on Sunday.''
A fierce competitor, Frew has made 65 appearances for the Steel.
She missed the 2012 season to start a family but has otherwise been with the franchise since the inaugural season in 2008.
She also had a long stint with the enormously successful Sting before the advent of the ANZ Championship.
Frew arguably had one of her best seasons for the Steel last year despite coming back from the birth of her only child, son Archie.
Her ability to read the game and the work she does off the ball can go unnoticed by the casual observer.
But it is that knack of popping up right where she is needed which has seen her make the wing defence bib her own.
She is streetwise in that sense and a key part of the defence which is hoping to create more turnover ball this season.
One of the big lessons from last year was the side would need to generate more on defence.
The Steel also had mental lapses which proved costly.
''The games we lost we played well for three quarters and then had a quarter where the other team dominated us and put on some big points.
''If we can get a few more turnovers on defence in a quarter or in a game then we will be able to shoot those goals. So for us it is consistency and getting a bit more hungry on defence and nailing a few more intercepts.''
The arrival of 1.93m defender Erena Mikaere should help.
Mikaere did not get many opportunities when she was with the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic, so she is an unknown quantity.
But then again so was 1.98m Jamaican shooter Jhaniele Fowler-Reid and we know how much impact the MVP had on the tournament last year.
''[Erena] certainly has some really good skills to offer and is going to be a good option at the back.''
The defence will still be organised around Rachel Rasmussen but the other starting spots are up for grabs.
Phoenix Karaka probably has first dibs but Mikaere's height is a big advantage.
Winning in Australia has been another major hurdle for the Steel.
In 16 attempts the Steel is yet to post a win.
It is not a statistic Frew needs much reminding about.
''We just haven't played well enough to win, I suppose.
"It is not nice losing so many games and winning over there is something we really want to do.
"We are ticking all the boxes with travel and recovery and training, it is just about the seven on the court dominating their opponents.''
The Steel does not have a good record against the Queensland Firebirds, with just one win from six games.
The Steel's pre-season has been a bit disrupted with injury setbacks and some players out due to international duty as well.
''Leading into game one it would have been nice to have some more games where all our players were available. We've done the best we can and have certainly been training really hard. Hopefully all that work pays off on Sunday.''
