Netball: Stricken stadium considers court import

Stadium Southland management is considering importing a sprung wooden court from Singapore to host the region's netball and basketball games in the velodrome until the stadium can be rebuilt.

Part of the stadium's roof collapsed following heavy snowfall last weekend and repairs could take up to 18 months.

In an email, Stadium Southland general manager Nigel Skelt said discussions with the Southern Steel and Southland Sharks about the potential purchase of a temporary playing surface from Singapore had been positive.

"But there are many boxes to be ticked before the ship sails, including first establishing it will, in fact, meet their needs," he explained.

The Steel competes in an international competition which is televised and requirements of the broadcaster were a key consideration, he said.

Television crews are expected in Invercargill today for the Stags' Ranfurly Shield challenge against Auckland and it is hoped they will assess the velodrome's suitability.

The other consideration is whether the makeshift venue could safely seat 2500 people.

"Invercargill City Council building regulations service manager Simon Tonkin has had informal discussions with specialist fire engineers from Christchurch firm Cosgrove Major, with the aim of ultimately securing a certificate of compliance for a crowd of 2500," he said.
