Netball: Wait for Steel's two final roster spots

Southern Steel fans will have to wait until after the World Cup for next year's roster to be finalised.

The Steel still has two of 12 spots to fill for next year's ANZ Championship campaign, but teams cannot negotiate contracts with players between tomorrow and August 16, the final day of the World Cup.

Minus defender Phoenix Karaka, who signed with the Central Pulse last month, the Steel has retained its first-choice team from last season.

The return of defender Te Huinga Reo Selby-Rickit, who spent the past four years with the Pulse, partially cancels out Karaka's departure.

Only midcourter Katarina Cooper and shooter Sophia Fenwick have not yet been re-signed, but Netball South chief executive Lana Winders has not ruled out a potential return for either.

''We have got the core in terms of who was really important for us to secure,'' Winders said.

''We actually got that core quite quickly. Now, it's a case of working through a range of options for that 11th and 12th spot.

''So we're taking our time and doing some thinking with exactly what we want to achieve with those two spots. It ranges from how much experience we need - or can we afford to be more developmental with our thinking in those spots?''

The Steel had signed four midcourters, three shooters and three defenders, but the final make-up of the squad would ''ideally'' see four players in each position, Winders said.

''It depends on what talent is available and what we can secure,'' she said.

''It's a balance of what they bring to the team, what they bring to the court, experience versus inexperience. Those sort of factors come into it.''

Winders could not mention names, but said the franchise had been talking to different players regarding the final two positions.

Last season, the Steel roster comprised four shooters, five midcourters and just three defenders.

All teams have until August 28 to complete their rosters.
