Netball: White making most of new opportunity

Last year, the Mystics were a bogey team for Debbie White and the Steel, beating them in both encounters.

This year, the former Steel midcourter is hoping the trend will continue when the sides meet in Auckland on Monday.

White moved to Auckland in January to link up with the Northern franchise after a frustrating year for the Steel.

The one-time Silver Fern struggled to get regular court time and has found playing opportunities just as difficult to come by at the Mystics.

She started in the first three matches this season but has had to watch from the sideline for the past two weeks with Finau Pulu taking her wing defence spot.

While she would like more playing opportunities, life on and off the hardwood is just fine. The traffic is not as bad as she feared.

She is flatting with former Otago Rebels team-mate Anna Scarlett and four others, just a 20- to 25-minute drive from where the Mystics train every morning.

And she is doing some relief teaching, mostly at Mt Albert Grammar.

"I miss my friends and my house down there but it is just a new opportunity for me," White said. "So I'm just trying to make the most of it up here.

"It is a really good environment up here. When we are not training properly it is just a really relaxed, fun atmosphere. But when we are training it is really intense and there is lots of competition for places."

It is still relatively early in the ANZ Championship but the game shapes as a must-win for both sides.

With the Australian teams proving difficult to beat on their home soil, the derby matches have become even more crucial, White said.

The Mystics are in eighth place with two wins from five games and the Steel in seventh place with two wins from four matches.

"We're viewing every game as crucial . . . but you've just got to win all your New Zealand matches because the Aussies are just so sharp at the moment."

The Mystics derailed the Steel's late charge for a play-off spot last season with a 47-41 win in Auckland.

They also beat the Steel in Invercargill in round five after losing their opening four matches.

Those games were two of the Steel's worst performances and the camp will be keen to make amends.

The squad is stronger this season with the addition of Donna Wilkins and Adine Wilson, a point not lost on White.

"It was a pretty good side last year but Donna and Adine are bloody good players when they are on. So it will be a very tough match."
