Outstanding Steel still working on ways to improve

The Southern Steel has had an outstanding start to the season but it is still not satisfied.

Having won each of its first three games, racking up over 70 goals in each, it has emerged as the clear favourite for the ANZ Premiership title.

There is still a feeling it has room for improvement though.

That must be somewhat imposing for the winless Mainland Tactix, which it plays tonight in Christchurch.

''It's been a good start. Obviously, three from three is a very good feeling, but we still want to push from here,'' Steel captain Wendy Frew said.

''I think every week we've been improving in our performances so that's one of the goals we've set.

''So if we can continue to do that the next few weeks it'll be a nice feeling.

''We definitely need to get some more gains on the D [defensive] end.

''When we've been getting the gains we've been scoring off them, so more gains would help.

''And just the odd time when we have the chance to push out on a good lead we're often making silly personal errors.

''So if we can eliminate those that would be helpful. And just pushing each other on the court and trying to strive to be the best.''

The Steel has been training hard over the break since its previous game, keeping up its physical conditioning.

It is a strange outcome of the schedule this year, which means the team has had a lengthy break, before playing three games in six days.

Frew said it had felt funny having such a long gap, but the team had continued working towards preparing for the short turnarounds to come.

The Steel and Tactix met in the pre-season, the Steel notching two big wins.

Goal shoot Jhaniele Fowler-Reid was key to that and her ability to establish space around the goal has made her tough to stop so far.

She has formed a strong duo with Te Paea Selby-Rickit, who plays her 50th match for the Steel tonight.

The midcourt has been slick, while the defence has been disruptive. Jane Watson, in particular, has proved adept at getting deflections.

The Tactix has a young squad and has been without captain Jess Moulds.

It has struggled early on, cracking 40 goals just once in three games and falling to the lowly Northern Stars in round two.

However, Frew is looking forward to seeing what it has in store and is not taking the Mainland side lightly..

''The Tactix always come out firing against us; they always bring their A game.

''They're a quality side throughout the whole court and we know it's going to be a tough battle out there.

''We know we'll have to be on top of our game to be where we want to be at the end.''

The game begins at 7.40pm.
