Queenstown's Laurel Hubbard will be hoping to set the bar a little higher in Samoa.

The transgender weightlifter has been named in the New Zealand team for the 2019 Pacific Games which will be held in Apia in July.

The 41-year-old, who could not be reached for comment, failed to make a successful lift during her international return at the Arafura Games in Darwin last month.

It was her first international competition since she ruptured a ligament in her elbow at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games last year.

She missed in all three attempts to snatch 110kg and did not take part in the clean and jerk.

The archery, athletics and taekwondo teams were also announced, while the men's football team will be named in the coming weeks to take the total number of New Zealand athletes travelling to Samoa to 55.

It is the second time New Zealand has been invited to participate in the Pacific Games.

Commonwealth Games gold medallist David Liti was among the athletes named and was looking forward to going to his second Pacific Games.

"I competed at the last Pacific Games and it's a special competition for me with my Pacific heritage," he said.

"The level of weightlifting in the Pacific is really high so we're expecting some tough competition."

Otago's Sarah Langsbury (16) has been named in the athletics team.
