BMX: Elite riders seek qualifying points

Otago's elite BMX riders will be in action at the national qualifying meet at Forrester Park tomorrow.

The key riders to watch from the Dunedin club are Avon Peel, Kyle Rutherford, Amelia Johnston and Logan Keach.

Peel has shown good form on the Australian national series and won the 17 to 24 age group at the Nerang International.

He was first in the time trial and third overall in the Australian national series.

Rutherford is the points leader for 16-year-old boys this season. He holds the South Island title and is ranked ninth in New Zealand.

Johnston is both the North Island and South Island champion and is keen to confirm her standing by winning the national title in Tauranga at Easter.

Keach is ranked sixth in the South Island for the 20-inch wheel class and leads the standings in the cruiser class.

Younger riders to watch include Jacob Wadsworth (Dunedin) in the 8-year-old class and Alexandra riders Ben James (7) and Josh Smith (13) in their own class.

The Dunedin event is the third in the regional series after Alexandra and Invercargill.

Points gained will help riders qualify for the national championships in Tauranga.

The first Bike Balance race in the South Island will be held at Forrester Park today for riders under the age of 5.

More than 70 riders are expected to be in action at Forrester Park today and tomorrow.

The Bike Balance race for under-5s will be held from 3pm today and the national series qualifying races tomorrow from 11am to 1pm.
