The Kannewischer father and son combination played a key role in winning the Mornington club's first Bowls Dunedin title in 28 years.

The Mornington team of Geoff Hanna (67), Gary Clegg (63), Allen Kannewischer (22) and Steve Kannewischer (55) won the champion of champions fours when they beat Mike Wilson, Andy Gawn, Darrell Cape and Alistair Keith (Taieri) 13-9.

It was a long wait for the Mornington club because the last team to win a centre title was Jim Ferguson, Paddy Devlin, Clive Yeoman and Frank Harridge in the champion of champions fours in 1984.

It was the first centre title for all members of the Mornington team.

"I'm chuffed. It's great to win against the big guns of the game," skip Steve Kannewischer, a support worker, said.

"It was special to play with my son."

Allen Kannewischer, who works in IT, started playing bowls eight years ago. He has twice qualified for the New Zealand Kittyhawks singles finals.

"It was special to win my first centre title with my old man," Allen said said.

While the Kannewischers played in the final, Allen's grandfather, Maurice Kannewischer, who has been playing bowls for 55 years, cheered from the sidelines.

Clegg, a school caretaker, and lead Hanna, a retired financial adviser, had both been runner-up in centre events in the past.

Clegg reached the final of the open fours and Hanna was in the pairs with Mornington club president Trevor King six years ago.

The fours title capped off a successful season for the Mornington club, which also won two centre competitions. Mornington won section three of the Saturday morning competition and will be promoted to section two next year.

The club also won the Bridgeman Plate in the Saturday afternoon competition and will be promoted to the Holmes Feathers next year.
