Curling: Selectors stick with beaten finalists

They have retained their spots. The New Zealand men's team that finished fifth at the world championships last April has been named for the Asia and Pacific championships in November.

There was speculation that there might have been team changes after Peter de Boer's team was beaten in the final of the New Zealand championships at Naseby earlier this month.

They were beaten by the New Zealand senior men (over age 50) team in a surprise result.

"We've kept faith with the side," the convener of the national selection panel, Darren Carson, said.

"They were the dominant side at our national championships apart from an off game in the final.

"They were outstanding with their fifth place in Switzerland. We think that they can continue with that kind of form."

The selection is sensible because the team has put New Zealand in a good spot to cement a Winter Olympic spot in Russia in 2014. New Zealand last contested the Winter Olympics in 2006.

A top-two finish in the Asia-Pacific championship at Naseby will qualify the team for the 2013 world championships where it can earn Olympic qualifying points.

De Boer's side has a very real chance of doing that if it plays to its potential and earns the right to add to the points it secured in Switzerland.

Birkenhead College student Kelsi Heath, a Youth Olympian in January, is the new face in the New Zealand women's side.

The New Zealand under-21 teams for January's Asia-Pacific junior championships in Japan are. -Men: Liam Dowling (Wedderburn), Willie Miller (Ranfurly), Brett Sargon (Auckland), Luke Steele (Ranfurly), Garion Long (Auckland).

Women: Chelsea Farley, Thivya Jeyaranjan, Tessa Farley, Kelsi Heath, Eleanor Adviento (all Auckland).

There is only one place for Asia-Pacific nations at the world junior championships, so only a gold medal in Japan will see a team progress.
