It is amazing how far you can get on apple crumble and hangi.

For four Otago MMA fighters that tasty combination is getting them all the way to Bahrain where they will contest the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation amateur world championships next week.

New Zealand is sending a team of 13 fighters and Otago has supplied almost a quarter of the competitors.

Light heavyweight Lala Halangahu (25), welterweights Taylor Garrett (22) and Pat Hamer (23) and the pint-sized Hannah Dawson (23) leave for Bahrain today.

New Zealand coach Matt Toa has high hopes for the quartet.

''I've been the coach for the New Zealand team for the last four years so I know the standard of competition that these guys have got and know the training that is available [in New Zealand],'' Toa said.

''Some of these other countries are still in the early progression stage, whereas in New Zealand we've had MMA established for a while now.

''So even though their number of fights is not high, in amateur terms it is not too bad and Hannah's skill level is definitely up there.

''The welterweight division that Taylor and Pat are in is a pretty stacked division, so they will probably end up fighting four or five times to get through to the finals.

''Hannah has six in her division [strawweight] and Lapa is in the 93kg division which is a big division. Odds-wise, Hannah probably has two or three fights, whereas the boys have a longer run to get to the finals.''

The trip to Bahrain is self-funded, costing each athlete about $4000.

There have been raffles and quiz nights to help raise funds and the hangi and apple crumble was a change from the traditional cheese rolls.

''Everyone has a freezer full of cheese rolls so we thought hangi and apple crumble would be something different,'' Toa said.

The tournament has attracted more than 250 athletes from 40 countries.

It is being hosted by the Bahrain MMA Federation in Manama at Khalifa Sports City Arena on November 12-19.

The opening ceremony and tournament draw take place on November 12 with competition starting the following day.

The tournament takes a break on November 17 so a professional MMA event can be staged.

The finals are scheduled for November 18.

The championships will be IMMAF's biggest yet with 14 weight categories, from strawweight to lightweight for women, and flyweight to super heavyweight for men.
