Mixed martial arts: UFC champion heading to Dunedin

She is known for having a chin of steel, has the nickname "Bad Boy" and is coming to Dunedin in August.

Mixed martial arts fighters and trainers will get the opportunity to learn from one of the sport's elite when Ultimate Fighting Championship competitor Brian Ebersole holds a seminar at the Team Hammerhead base at the Olympic Fight Centre in Mosgiel.

Ebersole, a 31-year-old American, will pass on some of the skills he has learnt over his 12-year career in one of the world's toughest sports.

Hammerhead promoter, trainer and fighter Matt Toa invited Ebersole to Dunedin after meeting him at a seminar in Christchurch last year.

Toa said Ebersole told him then he would be interested in checking out the Dunedin fight scene when he was back in New Zealand.

When Christchurch promoter Matt Te Paa organised for Ebersole to come back this year, Toa jumped at the opportunity to get the fighter to Dunedin.

"We are really excited to have a fighter of Brian's calibre coming here. To give people the opportunity to learn off a UFC fighter for what I believe will be the first time in Dunedin's history will be a real highlight."

Toa said any fighter or trainer from any club in Dunedin was welcome to attend the seminar and anyone interested could contact him through the Olympic gym.

Ebersole will arrive in Dunedin on August 26 after holding two other seminars in Auckland and Christchurch.

The seminar in Dunedin will start at 1pm and will last for about two hours.

Ebersole, a welterweight, is fighting American T.J Waldburger on the main fight card for today's UFC event in Atlanta.

He is undefeated in his three previous fights and has never been knocked out in his 65-fight professional career.

Ebersole likes to throw this statistic in his opponent's face and is renowned for shaving an arrow into his chest, which points to his formidable chin.

Of his 65 fights, Ebersole has won 49, lost 14 and had one draw and one no-contest.

He began his mixed martial arts career as a 19-year-old and has fought as a middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight.

Between 2002 and 2004, Ebersole fought a staggering 23 times in various promotions.

He was born in Indiana and raised in Illinois. '

He moved to Melbourne six years ago and is still based there, although he fights out of Tiger Muay Thai in Phuket, Thailand.

Ebersole finally got his shot at the UFC in February last year, when he beat fellow American Chris Lytle by a unanimous points decision.

The UFC held its first event in 1993 and has had 146 pay-per-view fight cards as well as about 15 smaller events.

It is the highest level a mixed martial arts fighter can reach, and its titles are recognised around the world as the equivalent of world titles. Forbes magazine estimates UFC's net worth to be more than $1 billion.
